Social media are not billboards. Nobody is following you to let them tell you how good you are on a daily basis. People already see enough advertisements each day.
You’d better show your specialism by sharing your knowledge. Clients will eventually come to you when they need someone with your specialism.
Share your knowledge
I manage this in two ways. I’m blogging on a regular basis about websites, online marketing and entrepreneurship. I share these articles with my mailing list and on Twitter and LinkedIn, the two social networks I use for business purposes.
The blog topics are always coming from my clients. When they ask me a question that I find interesting for everyone, I’ll write an article about it.
Furthermore I share two articles of others with my followers every day. The topics of these articles are always related to my specialisms and interests.
In this way you can show your knowledge in a subtil way, without it becoming irritating.
Tools
Let me explain you how you can share articles with your network in an easy way. I use the tools Instapaper, Buffer and IFTTT for it.
It works like this:
- I’m following the blogs I’m interested in on Twitter. When an article seems interesting to me, I save the tweet as a favorite. IFTTT transfers my favorites automatically to my Instapaper.
- On a moment of relaxation I read the articles in my Instapaper queue. When an article is interesting indeed, I like it in Instapaper. IFTTT automatically transfers my Instaper likes to my Buffer queue.
- In Buffer my Twitter account has been connected. I scheduled two daily tweets so Buffer is sending a tweet out twice a day.
- Because you can (unfortunately) only use one Buffer profile with IFTTT, I use anóther IFTTT recipe. This copies my tweets that contain hashtag #in to LinkedIn. All my Buffer tweets do have this hashtag automatically.
Like this I create a constant stream of interesting information for my followers without it costing me extra effort. Because I was already reading the articles.
